Text version:June 7, 2021Statement on #OurLondonFamilyThe Canadian Council of Imams is devestated after hearing the news about the ruthless killing of a Muslim family in London, Ontario on Sunday evening, driven by hate and Islamophobia. The Canadian Muslim community is still healing from the horrific killing in the IMO Mosque in September 2020, and the vicious attack on Muslim women in Alberta in March 2021. The Muslim community is now reeling from the death of 3 generations of Muslims in one targeted attack that can only be described as an act of terrorism on Canadian soil. The attack – which was described by the mayor as “mass murder” was carried out on purpose by 20 year old Nathaniel Veltman, who drove his truck onto the sidewalk and killed a grandmother, her son, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, and sent her 9 year old grandson to the hospital with serious injuries, as the only survivor in the family. We echo the call by our friends at the National Council of Canadian Muslims in asking all Canadians to change their social media profile pictures to the image of the Green Ribbon Against Islamophobia, and using the hashtag #OurLondonFamily. We invite the Canadian Muslim community and all allies to contribute to this fundraising campaign, established by the London Muslim Mosque and Islamic Relief, to support the surviving members of the family, who have asked for privacy so they may grieve in peace. The link for the fundraiser is:cutt.ly/ourlondonfamilyWe ask God Almighty to bestow His mercy on the victims, His consolations to the surviving members, and His support for justice to be served.SignedThe Canadian Council of Imams

This is not what you want to hear in the summer when all Canadians like to enjoy the outdoors with their families. A 20-year-old white male decided to take the lives of an entire family in a despicable and cowardly act of terror just because they were Muslims. We are shocked to hear the broad daylight murder of four members of an innocent family in London by an Islamophobic terrorist. This is a premeditated, horrific, vile terrorist attack. We request the lawmakers to punish the individuals to the maximum extent of the law and the policymakers to criminalize Islamophobia and white supremacy that has led to this attack. We lost three generations of women and the 9-year-old child, who is the only survivor, has to live with the trauma of losing his entire family in a second. May Allah have mercy on the martyrs, cure the boy who was injured in the terror attack, strengthen the resolve of friends and relatives, and protect us all from the evil that looms over us because of hatred and Islamophobia. "And they resented them and held grudge over them only for believing in Allah the Almighty, the Praiseworthy" (Al-Qur'an 85:8)

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but,We have a crisis.Despite being a minority, Muslims strive to be positive agents of change in their communities.Every Muslim living as a minority around the world shares this vision where they aim to be an ambassador of the good image of Islam. I've seen this in young and old Muslims, 'good' or 'bad' Muslims. I've met gang members shying away from being called their Muslim names because and I quote they "don't want others to think bad about Islam" because of them. The Muslim community in Ottawa has lost 4 Muslim youth this week in apparent gang assassinations and murders. The 3 suspects announced by police are also all Muslim youth, and the 4 murdered youth all have criminal records for gang violence and/or drugs.Despite being a minority, Muslims strive to be positive agents of change in their communities. All of the youth in this vicious cycle of bloodshed are in their 20s. Those are our children. This crisis is 100% ours. The four murders of this week perhaps damaged years of community work to show a positive image about Muslims in Canada. So, here's a quick call to action 1. Request your Mosque to address this issue with maximum urgency. Board statement, imam khutba, and a lecture to the community.2. Gather a group of Muslim parents and community leaders in your neighborhood, and request a meeting with the police, to understand from them, as community leaders, what proven methods they know already that can help curb this vicious cycle. To reduce stress on police, I highly suggest you gather around the Imam of your neighborhood ( Imam Zijad Delic for Barrhaven, Imam Sikander Ziad Hashmi for Kanata, Imam Owais Tully for Bells corner, Imam Dr. Muhammad Suliman for Ottawa Centre, Imam Ismail Albatnuni for South keys, Imam Samy Metwally for Gloucester, Imam Mohammed Badat for Orleans, and of course Imam Ahmed Limame for our friends north of the provincial border in Gatineau.)3. Having served as an imam in Ottawa, and continue to serve and provide counseling as a member of the Canadian Council of Imams, I've met with at least a dozen parents over the past couple of years weeping over their child who turned from a sweet boy into a gang criminal behind bars. Parents need resources and support on this. Families get separated and divorces take place over this. Mothers are left to deal with incarcerated sons because the father "had enough" with "her children." And no, I don't insinuate that all these children come from broken families. I've met highly educated, successful, wealthy and religious Muslim parents whose child is being bars for gangs and murders.I've visited the prison and seen at times more than 30% of inmates being Muslim, in a city where Muslims make 10%. And they're not even in the minor offenses section of the prison. This is why, I call upon every Imam in Ottawa, Toronto and beyond (wherever gangs is an issue within the Muslim youth community) to dedicate the coming Friday, June 4th to raise awareness about the Islamic Ruling of Gangs and Bloodshed. I'm dropping a hashtag too #FatalFriday. Feel free to use it.You may think "oh these people don't listen to mosques", but trust me, every Imam in Ottawa is 2-3 degrees of relation at most from a gang member. The father, the cousin, or the brother in law has got to be in the congregation. You may think "oh snitches get stiches", but those who didn't snitch are now in the morgue.I'll say it once more time, despite being a minority, Muslims strive to be positive agents of change in their communities. So please take a stance, and let this be the last gang related Muslim murder of the year in Ottawa.Feel free to forward the message directly to your Imam, masjid president, Islamic school board or Muslim community leaders.Majed Jarrar(Subscribe to my secure channel for direct feed outside of Facebook www.cutt.ly/mjarrarchannel)

The Canadian Council of Imams Welcomes The ICLMG Report on CRA Prejudiced Audits

The Canadian Council of Imams (CCI) welcomes the far overdue report published by the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group (ICLMG) titled The CRA’s Prejudiced Audits: Counter-Terrorism and the Targeting of Muslim Charities in Canada.
