Official Statement by the Canadian Council of Imams on the Anti-Muslim Riots and the Attacks on Sacred Places in Sri Lanka

The Canadian Council of Imams (CCI) expresses its concerns over the recent communal violence in Sri Lanka which has victimized Muslims in their holy month Ramadan.

The extremist and racist mobs have burned down over 30 villages, looted Muslim-owned businesses, and desecrated several mosques and religious educational institutions, burning the Qur’ans. The violence have so far claimed the lives of 5 Muslims who were fasting in this blessed month.

The above riots follow the hundreds of arbitrary arrests, harassment and verbal attacks as well as denial of health and basic services to Muslim women who were subjected to a recent Niqab ban.

The Canadian Council of Imams strongly condemn the vicious attacks on innocent lives and sacred places of worship that brings together community and provide people hope and solace.

Given the alarming state and the possibility of violence spreading to other parts of Sri Lanka, the Canadian Council of Imams (CCI) calls upon the Sri Lankan authorities to immediately contain the violence against its religious minority, bring the perpetrators to justice without impunity, and treat all its religious and ethnic minorities equally. CCI also calls upon the Canadian politicians at all levels to condemn all atrocities against minorities in Sri Lanka that aim to destabilize the country and sow the seeds of hatred and animosity among its people.

The Canadian Council of Imams (CCI) requests all Muslims, in particular Imams, community leaders, academics and activists to pray in this blessed month for the safety of Sri Lankan Muslims and encourage everyone to support and take part in the protest organized by the Sri Lankan-Canadian Muslims at Yonge-Dundas square on Sunday, May 19 at 2pm. ...
