CCI Statement on the OPP Investigation Re: Soleiman Faqiri

The Canadian Council of Imams (CCI) is dismayed by the refusal of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) to hold accountable guards from the notorious Central East Correctional Centre who were involved in beating Mr. Soleiman Faqiri’s to death. The OPP has failed in investigating itself, and it is time for an independent, transparent investigation that would bring accountability and justice to Ontario.

It is unconscionable to allow the killing of a mentally ill young man at the hands of guards, employed with our tax-dollars, to pass without accountability. The coroner’s report clearly found more than 50 cuts, bruises and other “obvious” signs of injury all over Soleiman’s body – all were the result of “blunt impact trauma.” OPP’s decision sends a chilling signal of impunity when correctional officers are not held to account for unjust excessive, let alone lethal, use of force. This does not reflect Canadian values or laws.

At this political moment in which we stand in solidarity with our US American neighbors in their struggle against structural racism and police brutality, we demand that our provincial government in Ontario set an example of transparency and accountably by launching an immediate independent investigation into the killing of Soleiman Faqiri.

Signed
The Canadian Council of Imams
